We are
located just off Route 1, a short
distance west of downtown Bath. We are part of Regional School Unit 1,
the first new school district in 40 years. RSU 1 includes the towns of
Phippsburg, Arrowsic, Woolwich, West Bath and the city of
Bath.
West Bath School is a grade K-6 school of 125 students
with a teacher-pupil ratio of 1 to 15 in most classrooms. A staff of 25
includes classroom teachers, special services and specialist teachers
and support personnel.
Students, parents, educators, and
community members of the West Bath School are working collaboratively
to engage children in ways that develop a lifelong
love of learning.
We hold high academic and social expectations for all students.
Our
all day kindergarten program provides an active, learning rich
environment for five year olds. K and first grade classroom teachers
work collaboratively with our speech and language and occupational
therapists and our special education teacher to provide a balanced
research-based approach. This team uses frequent formative assessments
to inform and adjust instruction to the evolving needs of our youngest
students.
The Ready, Set, Go Kindergarten Connections Program
offers once a month school based meetings for four year olds and their
families.
Students
may be
taught in multi-grade or traditional classrooms. At times teachers go
with or loop with their class from one grade to the next. Students
receive weekly instruction in a foreign language, music, art, health,
physical education and technology. Instrumental lessons and chorus are
open to students in grades 4, 5 and 6.
Staff members meet
weekly in professional learning communities that promote teamwork,
shared goals, open communication and data driven, research based
practices. Our dedicated staff of professionals creates a nurturing,
academically rigorous school experience for students.
Measures
of academic achievement include the MEA’s, NWEA’s,
the Diagnostic
Reading Assessment and the Union 47 Writing Prompt. Data from these and
numerous classroom based formative assessments are used to
individualize and guide instruction.
Teachers use the Sitton Spelling, EveryDay Math, and Six Trait Writing
Programs to support literacy and math instruction.
Reading
and Math Boost programs provide six to twelve weeks of focused small
group or one on one instruction designed to accelerate literacy and/or
numeric growth for students needing additional support to
reach grade level
expectations.
The West Bath Media Center offers a dynamic learning environment in
which reading and research are promoted.
Members
of the school’s Wellness Teams lead school-wide activities
and
practices that make the school environment an increasingly healthy,
nutritionally rich, physically active environment. A salad bar is
available with the hot lunch program three days a week, a once a week
after school Tae Kwon Do class is offered to all students free of
charge throughout the school year. Student led Take Time activates
increase the amount of time students spend in vigorous physical
activity daily.
Assemblies
or community meetings bring all students and staff together monthly to
sing, showcase student work and celebrate student learning.
Parents
play an invaluable role in supporting the academic, social, emotional
and physical growth of children. The school/home partnership is a
powerful one. Frequent communication between school and families is
encouraged. Student progress is reported formally four times a year and
conferences take place in November and April.
The school office is open from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. daily. School is
in session from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
